Abstract

Antibiotic resistance has become a major global public health concern due to the irrational use of antibiotics. Misuse of antibiotics, including self-medication, inappropriate dosage, and discontinuation of treatment before completion, contributes significantly to the emergence of resistant bacteria. This community service program aimed to improve public knowledge regarding appropriate antibiotic use and the prevention of antibiotic resistance. The activity was conducted among 35 residents of Cipinang Besar Selatan RW 05, East Jakarta, through health education sessions, interactive discussions, and pre-test and post-test evaluations. Educational materials covered the definition and function of antibiotics, differences between bacterial and viral infections, causes and impacts of antibiotic resistance, proper antibiotic use, and preventive measures against resistance. The results demonstrated a substantial increase in participants' knowledge, as indicated by an improvement in the percentage of correct answers from 62.3% in the pre-test to 98.3% in the post-test. Participants also showed high enthusiasm during discussions and question-and-answer sessions. These findings indicate that community-based health education is effective in enhancing public awareness and understanding of rational antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance prevention.
